According to local estimates, there are approximately 800 indigenous asylum-seekers from Venezuela in the State of Pará. All of them belong to the Warao ethnic group and most are accommodated in municipal and state emergency reception sites. The absence of systematic data collection or a state-wide database makes obtaining more accurate and up-to-date data a challenge, which in turn makes it more difficult to design adequate responses for this population and estimate the number of non-indigenous Venezuelans in Pará. Estimates are based primarily on the number of PoCs residing in shelters managed by various state and municipal actors. The most urgent needs of indigenous asylum seekers in the State of Pará include access to basic needs, including adequate shelter, water, sanitation and health. In addition, there are specific protection risks linked to the high rate of unaccompanied and separated children and adolescents as well as to their specificities as an indigenous group with their own cosmovision (e.g. language, values, different family structures and understanding of childhood, existence of traditional health/healing mechanisms, among others). UNHCR is, hence, working together with the local government, the Federal Police, the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office and the civil society to provide technical support and improve the humanitarian response in the region.
