Main purpose of job:
This is a wide-ranging position, perfect for someone looking to apply their foreign policy expertise and create real world positive change. The role would suit a dynamic team player, who could utilise good organisational and management skills to direct and shape their work.
The job holder would be expected to provide analysis, advice and leadership on a range of foreign policy issues; to develop engagement plans and maintain a strong and diverse network of contacts to inform UK thinking; to support the team leader and senior leadership in furthering UK interests; and to provide consistent line management and build capacity within the team.
Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:
1. Foreign Policy Analysis: the jobholder will monitor and report on a wide range of foreign policy issues, including but not limited to: Brazil’s bilateral relationships, multilateral priorities, and regional trends, and thematic foreign policy issues of particular interest to the UK including human rights. Central to the role is the ability to inform UK thinking on these issues by providing advice and analysis, based on both detailed insights and broader strategic knowledge. The job holder will be expected to act as a credible representative for the British Government in external meetings, cultivating a wide network of influential contacts. Responsibilities additionally include assisting the team leader and senior leadership in identifying risks and opportunities to deliver UK priorities, advising on how best to have an influence, and communicating complex messages with clarity and sensitivity.
2. Project and financial management: the jobholder will be required to oversee the design, implementation, and evaluation of projects, led by the Political Analyst. These projects must help to achieve UK foreign policy objectives and produce tangible outcomes. Typically, projects involve working with a wide range of civil society organisations, think tanks and academics. The jobholder is expected to cultivate positive relationships with a diverse range of project implementers. The jobholder will be responsible for ensuring that their financial management complies with set policies and regulations, that risks are managed effectively, and that the projects have the intended impact.
3. Leadership: the jobholder needs to be a strong team player, committed to their own and others learning and development. As a line manager to the Political Analyst, the jobholder is expected to give good direction, support and advice in order to motivate the best possible performance from others. It will be necessary, at times, for the jobholder to change their priorities and adapt to the demands on the team of the network. Flexibility and resilience are highly valued as are the ability to work to tight deadlines, under pressure.

- Previous experience of foreign policy analysis.
