Org. Setting and Reporting

The mission of OHCHR’s Regional Office for South America is to observe, promote and protect human rights in seven countries across the region: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. To that end, we establish relationships for close cooperation, technical assistance and permanent dialogue with governments, national human rights institutions, civil society organizations, UN country teams and agencies, among others. We contribute to strengthening the capacity of these actors, so as to improve the promotion and protection of human rights, according to international norms. Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.

Daily duties may include:Depending on the division to which he or she is assigned, the intern will carry out the following responsibilities:
•Assist in monitoring developments (human rights, politics, socio-economic affairs) in the South American region
•Assist in drafting reports, background notes, talking points, summaries and other documents for the Regional Office and OHCHR headquarters
•Assist in providing information to UN human rights mechanisms such as treaty bodies and special procedures
•Prepare presentations and materials on human rights law and issues
•Carry out research on international and national law, case law and make summaries thereof
•Attend and summarizeworkshops and meetings
•Assist in organizing and managing conferences, trainings and otherevents
•Assist in reviewing, preparing and distributing news and notes on human rights issues
•Assist in preparing, drafting and reviewing public information materials
•Assist inimplementing the Regional Office’s public information and media activities
•Translatedocuments
•Perform other tasks as necessary

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

(a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;
– Be computer literate in standard software applications;
– Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
-Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Advanced knowledge of Spanish (both oral and written) is required for the Internship Programme. Advanced knowledge of English is required. Knowledge of Portuguese and/or of another UN official language would be an asset.

Special Notice

Interns are expected to work on a full-time basis (work five days per week; 35 hours) in the Division/Section to which they are assigned, but they may undertake flexible working arrangements, subject to certain conditions.
The internship is UNPAID. All costs of travel and accommodation, including living expenses, must be covered by the intern or any relevant sponsoring institution.

Interns shall not be eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, positions at the professional level and above for a period of six months following the end of their internship.

United Nations Considerations

According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity. Candidates will not be considered for employment with the United Nations if they have committed violations of international human rights law, violations of international humanitarian law, sexual exploitation or sexual abuse, or crimes other than minor traffic offences, or if there are reasonable grounds to believe that they have been involved in the commission of any of these acts. The term “sexual exploitation” means any actual or attempted abuse of a position of vulnerability, differential power, or trust, for sexual purposes, including, but not limited to, profiting monetarily, socially or politically from the sexual exploitation of another. The term “sexual abuse” means the actual or threatened physical intrusion of a sexual nature, whether by force or under unequal or coercive conditions.
