Cordaid is looking for a motivated, versatile, and independent intern to explore and support Cordaid’s work on integrity and safeguarding for the period November 2020 until April 2021.

Cordaid’s mission is to reduce fragility and people’s vulnerability where it is most needed and most difficult: in fragile and conflict-affected settings. We envisage a world where the basics of a life in dignity are available to all, where the poorest and the excluded can influence the decisions that affect them.

Any type of harm perpetrated by our staff jeopardizes our efforts to contribute to a world where each person is free to flourish and can live in peace. Therefore, Cordaid has set up an integrity system to prevent, identify and respond to:

  • safeguarding concerns including sexual exploitation and abuse, harassment, discrimination or bullying, as well as
  • financial misconduct, including fraud and corruption.

We are working hard to ensure that Cordaid is a safe and welcoming workplace for every body, that we treat everyone who comes into contact with Cordaid with respect and dignity, and that we use all powers, authorities, assets, resources, and funds entrusted to us appropriately.

In this internship, you will be able to apply your state-of-the-art knowledge and skills in the fields of gender, social justice and communications to support Cordaid’s integrity work. This role is an exciting opportunity to get professional experience in a challenging, yet increasingly important topic in international development, humanitarian aid and peacebuilding. In a safe learning environment, you will be able to actively contribute to Cordaid’s communications and everyday work on integrity.

As intern, you will mainly support and be supported by the Integrity Officer. Depending on the specific tasks, you will also be working with colleagues from various departments both in The Hague and internationally.

Main tasks:

…in terms of communications:

  • Analyze internal and external stakeholders and communication needs,
  • Develop and design user-friendly communication materials for different stakeholders.

…in terms of content:

  • Support the everyday work of the Integrity Officer,
  • Support the planning, facilitation, and follow-up processing of integrity workshops, with the option of facilitating a part yourself with the support of the Integrity Officer,
  • Contribute to ongoing initiatives such as the reflections on #AidToo and #AntiRacismInAid.

…in terms of admin and logistics:

  • Support everyday administrative and logistical tasks related to integrity, e.g. creation of events, communication with participants, note taking, etc.

At Cordaid, we aim to guide our interns to contribute to the everyday work of the subject area. At the same time, you are strongly encouraged to take initiative and to play an active role in shaping your own learning plan depending on your specific interests.

Given the sensitive nature of integrity issues, you will not be involved in the management of misconduct cases. Nevertheless, you will be able to get an in-depth look at integrity and safeguarding best practice and the everyday work of strengthening integrity in an international organization.

Criteria for applicants:

  • Enrollment in a relevant degree (e.g. related to international development, gender, humanitarianism and conflict, human rights, communications, sociology, organizational psychology, etc.),
  • Commitment to social justice issues and solid understanding of intersecting power relations such as gender, race, ethnicity, age, religion and ability,
  • Basic understanding of development and humanitarian work and related integrity and safeguarding concerns,
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English and preferably also French (Dutch not required),
  • Excellent ability to develop and design user-friendly reports, infographics, and other digital and analogue communication materials,
  • Understanding of the sensitive nature of integrity issues,
  • A proactive, open and curious attitude with intercultural sensitivity,
  • Being able to work independently and think out of the box,
  • Well-organized and solution-oriented,
  • Flexible and able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously,
  • Willing to contribute to a positive work environment.

Candidates with affiliation with any of the countries Cordaid works in are strongly encouraged to apply.

Disclaimer: Although the intern will not be involved in the handling of integrity cases, the internship includes engagement with sensitive and potentially distressing issues, especially those linked to sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment. While the intern should be generally willing and able to engage with these issues, they will be supported by the Integrity Officer to the extent possible. Wherever required, we will encourage and facilitate additional well-being supports, for example in the form of an internship ‘mentor’.

Relevant information for applying:

  • The internship will be up to 6 months for 2-3 days/week, depending on your availability. The compensation will be proportional to the hours worked and will amount up to 350 EUR monthly (based on a full-time contract).
  • In principle, the internship is based in The Hague. Due to the current regulations regarding COVID-19, the internship will take place mainly remotely, with face to face interaction if and where possible and safe. Where applicable, travel expenses are covered by Cordaid.
  • IT equipment (laptop etc.) will be provided for the duration of the internship.
  • To apply, please submit your CV, a letter of motivation and the contact details of at least one professional/university referee before Sunday, November 15th 2020.
  • Please submit your application in English to the attention of Maria Wagner, Integrity Officer, through our website.
  • If you have further questions, please feel free to contact Maria Wagner, Integrity Officer via mwg@cordaid.org.
