Result of Service:

The Communication Consultant tasks and responsibilities related to the Environmental Rights Initiative in Brazil will include:

– Regularly communicate, plan and execute activities aligned with the global Environmental Rights Initiative led by the Law Division;
– Provide overall support to the implementation of the Environmental Rights Initiative in Brazil, including organization of events and press conferences, production of information materials, videos and media products, translation and other tasks;
– Organize and promote trainings for media professionals and university students;
– Work in coordination with the Brazilian Communication Manager and the Headquarter Communication Manager to create, organize and develop a Handbook;
– Coordinate the translation of e-courses to Portuguese.
– Collect background information and contribute to the preparation of reports, project documents, presentations and working papers;
– Engage in strategic communications planning and processes to strengthen the visibility of the Initiative and raise public awareness on the issue in Brazil;
– Contact and work with print and broadcast media to generate proactive and positive news coverage;
– Monitor national media and initiate and respond to media contacts with required speed and skill;
– Liaise with partners (projects, UN agencies, NGOs and other counterparts) for dissemination of activities at sub-regional and national level;
– Regularly update the UN Environment Brazil website as well as the UN Environment Brazil social networks with content related to the Initiative;
– Provide and share information on the Initiative’s activities in Brazil to be published by the global UN Environment communications network;
– Work in coordination with the Human Rights area of the Resident Coordinator Office (RCO) of the UN System in Brazil linked to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights;
– Participate at the UN interagency working group on human rights defenders, under the guidance of the Representative.

The Communication Consultant tasks and responsibilities related to the UN Environment Office in Brazil will include:

– Monitor national media and establish the overall capacity of the Country Office to initiate and respond to media contacts with required speed and skill;
– Create press releases, stories and coverage of events to strengthen the visibility of the organization and raise public awareness on environmental issues.

Work Location

UN Environment Brazil Office – Brasilia, Brazil

Expected duration

The contract duration is of 12 (twelve) months.

Duties and Responsibilities

The objective of this Term of Reference is to hire a Communication Consultant to support the implementation of the UN Environmental Rights Initiative in Brazil. Under the direct guidance of the UN Environment Brazil Office Representative, the Communication Consultant will be responsible for the implementation of all communications activities (including outreach, trainings, content development and media relationships, events and workshops) required to implement the ERI in Brazil.

Qualifications/special skills

Mandatory skills:
– Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

– Have demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views;

– Good communication skills and capacity for writing texts, documents, reports and correspondences.

Academic Qualifications: Graduation degree in Communication, Journalism, Media or related field. A post-graduate qualification in Communication, International Relations or related field is desirable.

Mandatory Work Experience:
– Minimum of 4 (four) years` experience in the field of communication, public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area.
– Experience with International Environmental Law

Desirable Work Experience:
– Previous experience within UN System
– Experience with initiatives for Human and Environmental Rights
– Experience in the usage of computers and office software package, in handling web based
management systems and knowledge of spreadsheet and database packages.

Language: Fluency (oral and written) in Portuguese and English.
